Excited for that date night or catching up with a friend? But what happens when your phone takes centre stage? Studies suggest that even the mere presence of a smartphone in a social setting may influence the quality of relationship formed, and picking it up can be perceived as disengagement which can impact group or interpersonal dynamics (Juhasz & Bradford 2016; Hendry, Wiggins, & Anderson, 2016).

So how could taking your phone on a date affect your relationships?
Distractions:
Constantly checking your phone may make your partner or friend feel unimportant and that they do not have your full attention.
Increased stresses:
Checking notifications could create stress or anxiety that could disrupt the atmosphere of the date.
Miscommunication:
While you are looking down at your phone you may miss important non-verbal cues such as body language that could lead to misunderstandings or conflict.
Lack of presence:
Not giving your undivided attention means you are missing out on being in the moment, this could cause disappointment or dissatisfaction with the experience.
Decreased emotional connection:
Spending time checking your phone can decrease the ability to have meaningful conversation or connections.
Need support in creating healthier smartphone habits and digital wellbeing.
